a different way to read the news

The news is fascinating and the ability to know so much in real time is both incredible and debilitating. I have struggled with how to stay informed and not drown in anxiety. I love reading the paper and every app/podcast available.

I am proposing one possible way to look at the news from a heart of compassion and prayer. Will you try it with me today?

Below are some of the top stories from today. I am including only the pictures and their descriptions. Slow down to look at these photos. Try to think past political parties, leaders, policies and countries and see only the people.

As you slowly look and observe each photo, could you pray for the people you see and others who are likely affected?

“Saudi Arabia has canceled the scholarships of 16,000 of its students studying in Canada, also ordering them to leave the country and find academic programs elsewhere. Saudi activist Samar Badawi at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in 2012. Saudi Arabia placed Badawi in detention last week.” via Newsweek

“Pro-choice campaigners consoled each other after the vote, but anti-abortion campaigners were ecstatic” via bbc

Praying through the news is a constant struggle for me. It is NEVER easy. My mind nearly always slips into my opinions.. the people I like and don’t like, the things I stand for and don’t. However, I am fighting to see people more and politics less. It is no easy task.

How do practice compassion as you read the news?
